Barcode Scanners for Gift Cards and Key Tags: What Actually Works

Almost any modern barcode scanner will read a gift card or key tag, as long as it supports Code 128 and is connected to your POS as a keyboard. Where people get stuck is buying a 1D scanner for a system that uses QR codes, or a scanner the tablet can't pair with. This guide covers what to check before you buy and how to test it in two minutes.

1D or 2D: Match the Scanner to the Code

Gift cards and key tags usually carry a 1D barcode, most often Code 128, sometimes Code 39. A basic 1D laser or linear imager reads those. If your POS uses QR codes, as Shopify POS does for gift cards, you need a 2D imager, which reads both 1D barcodes and QR. When in doubt, buy 2D. It costs a little more and reads everything.

USB, Bluetooth, or Built-In Camera

USB (wired)

Plugs into a Windows or Mac register and types the scanned number as if from a keyboard. The most reliable option for a fixed front desk.

Bluetooth

Pairs with an iPad, Android tablet, or phone-based POS. Look for a scanner that supports HID keyboard mode, which is what most POS apps expect. Some POS platforms only certify specific Bluetooth scanners; check their hardware list first.

Tablet camera

Some POS apps can scan with the device camera. Fine for occasional use, slow for a busy front desk, and it needs good light. A gym checking in 200 members a day should use a dedicated scanner.

Scanners Commonly Used at Front Desks

You don't need an industrial scanner. Front desks at gyms, salons, and restaurants typically run one of these categories:

  • Entry-level USB 1D scanners from brands like Tera, Inateck, and NADAMOO, common at gyms on Windows check-in stations
  • Mid-range 2D imagers such as the Zebra DS2208 or Honeywell Voyager 1250g/1400g, the standard choice when you want one scanner that reads everything
  • Bluetooth scanners certified for tablet POS, such as Socket Mobile models for Square and Shopify, or the scanner your platform lists in its hardware guide

The Three Settings That Stop Scans

Code 128 is turned off

Many scanners ship with only UPC and EAN enabled. Scan the enable code for Code 128 (and Code 39 if needed) from the scanner's manual.

No Enter suffix

The POS needs the scanner to send an Enter or Tab after the number. Most manuals have a setup code for 'add CR/LF suffix.' Without it the number sits in the field and nothing happens.

Wrong keyboard mode

Bluetooth scanners often default to a serial mode. Switch to HID keyboard mode so the POS sees the scan as typed input.

Two-Minute Test

  • Open a plain text field (Notes on a tablet, Notepad on Windows)
  • Scan the card. The number should appear and the cursor should drop to the next line.
  • If nothing appears, check the connection or keyboard mode
  • If the number appears but no line break, add the Enter suffix
  • If a different number appears, the scanner is reading a different barcode type or check digit setting

Once it types cleanly into a text field, it will work in your POS.
